Quality of service (QoS) is a top concern for any enterprise building a VoIP system. Since the VoIP gateway lies at the heart of VoIP QoS, it's important to analyze prospective products for their QoS support capabilities.

Low-end and mid-level VoIP gateways generally provide only a limited number of QoS functions. But any Carrier class VoIP gateway , under consideration should either provide or support various traffic shaping algorithms, including priority queuing, class-based queuing (CBQ) and token bucket with priority queuing, all of which will give VoIP traffic the required data network. Additionally, adding an adaptive dynamic jitter buffer can help optimize the performance of voice and fax traffic.

The gateway's QoS functionality, as well as its voice quality parameters (such as packet loss, jitter, delay and signal levels), should be carefully measured and validated using specialized testing equipment. Doing so will benchmark the quality and effectiveness of both the gateway and the overall VoIP system.
