(NC)-Every spring, outdoor decor ends up at the curb in what has become an annual ritual of tossing out what didn't make it through winter.

Why not help keep garbage out of the landfill by transforming would-be trash into things of beauty?

"You may be surprised by what can be restored and beautified with a little paint and T.L.C.," says Jane Lavin, spokesperson for Tremclad Rust Paint. "Rusting metal, stained plastic and even terra cotta can be made better than new."

Lavin offers some simple ideas for projects that will help spruce up your backyard:

• Get another year out of your weather-beaten barbecue with a rust-preventive high heat enamel that provides a deep colour and a rich sheen.

• Revitalize that old mailbox. You'll be surprised by how much it adds to the curb appeal of your house. Try Tremclad's leather brown or spring green paint.

• Brighten up your weary terra cotta pots. Start with a can of white primer, then top with a vibrant colour like grape or wild raspberry.

• Sprout something beautiful with a watering can makeover in glacier blue and water your plants with style.

• Got an old metal gate? Transform it into a rose trellis. Prepare the metal, then finish with fire red paint. Plant roses and enjoy your trellis for years to come.

• Pretty up that old wooden picnic table with a quart of regal red.

"Turn your trash into treasures," says Lavin. "You'll have a little fun and do something good for the environment."
