In trend-conscious Boston, fashion designers are held to the highest standards. For two Boston designers, rising to the task is a matter of training and perseverance.

Fashion in Boston isn't hard to find. The city, with a population of nearly 600,000, is packed with exclusive boutiques, international fashion houses, retail opportunities, and style magazines critiquing local style. The fashion world is competitive in this big city, but two fashion designers have used innovation and business sense to work their way to the top of the local market.

From Dreams to Design

It all started with a patchwork boot. Nirva Derbekyan's first design, completed at age three, was the first sign of a fashion career that now turns heads on an international level. Derbekyan knew that she needed education to achieve her design dreams, and she trained at a fashion design school before entering into the industry.

Critics cite Derbekyan's "Nirva" line as timeless and feminine, chic and flirty with an elegant sense of confidence and style. Her couture line creates custom designs for clients on a one-on-one basis. Her designs can be found locally, at the Matsu Boutique in Boston, and at Sonia's Boutique in Lexington.

Custom Designs Thrive in Boston

Angela Sampson Brandenburg has a fashion mission: "My main goal, as a designer, is to create not only a piece of clothing for a client, but a piece of artwork that reflects his/her personality and is something enjoyable to wear," Brandenburg recently told a local fashion Web site. Her functional, comfortable designs include day and evening styles, along with an exercise-wear line.

Brandenburg earned her degree in fashion merchandising, design and production. Her Angela's Active collection has been praised by critics as comfortable, practical exercise apparel, featuring a colorful palette of blue and green hues. Today, Brandenburg designs seasonal collections as well as customized designs for clients.

In Boston's competitive fashion world, designers thrive on creativity, originality, and an innate sense of style. Boston's fashion designers work hard to attract devoted local fans at events like fashion shows and magazine events.
