Fashion in Houston can be as hip and trendy as on the coasts--just don't wear those boots too tight.
Houston Fashion Dos and Don'ts
by Amelia Gray
Fashion in Houston, TX, is exciting, cosmopolitan, and at times as international as fashion capitals like New York and Los Angeles. If you're a fashion design school student in Houston hoping to put a spin on this season's new styles, remember that there's a right way…and a very wrong way.
We've all seen the fashion victims, but styles change with the season and a faux pas is only one pair of jean shorts away. Remember these fashion tips when dressing or designing in Houston:
• Don't carelessly pair an old outfit with summer's metallic or tropical accents. Sorry,
baggy Wranglers and mercury pumps don't mix. Don't get us started on gaucho pants, and
step away from the capris.
• Do kick this season's styles up a notch by incorporating your regional fashion sense
into the latest trends. Consider cork-lined wedge shoes with a jean skirt, or a tropical
print headband to counteract the humidity.
• Don't copy New York fashion magazines piece-for-piece, unless wearing skinny jeans and a
long-sleeved top in a Texas July is your idea of a good time. You might sweat enough to
drop a pant size, but at what cost?
• Do transcend the western-wear stereotype, at least sometimes. There's something to be
said for state pride, but if our president can avoid wearing cowboy hats three days out
of the week, so can you!
• Don't forget the details. If you want the western look, choose boots that fit your feet
and the shape of your legs. If you're looking for East Coast chic, focus on cute shorts
and breezy tops.
• Do remember to look beyond the mall. Sure, The Galleria is the largest mall in Texas and
the seventh-largest in the United States...it has two Macy's. But don't forget
hardworking local designers and fashion design school graduates when you're considering
your next big spree.
• Don't miss out on all the cool places to show off your stunning style this summer.
Houston's art galleries, parks, and restaurants are fantastic places to create your own
do's and don'ts list.
Whatever you do (or don't), make sure you feel comfortable and proud about how you look.
