Old-looking fences need not be a problem. You can do a makeover to make it look attractive and new again. You can even choose from many styles if you want. Simply, stain can help you preserve and renew your wooden fence. You will be amazed at the wonders that you have done to your fence.

Things You Will Need for the Job

1. Brushes
2. Semi-transparent oil or latex/oil, or solid oil, or latex stain
3. Sandpaper
4. Tarps
5. Garden sprayer or airless paint sprayer

The following are quick guides to enable you to do the job right:

  • First is to choose the product you want and stain color.

  • Make sure that the wood is thoroughly cleaned and that all the grease has been removed.

  • Existing finishes should be stripped off and sand the wood properly as needed.

  • Start to apply the stain using a 4-inch paintbrush or painting pad and work with the grain and not across it.

  • To get the stain into cracks and crevices and between boards and around hardware, use a 2-inch paintbrush.

  • Be sure to blend the end of each application to prevent stripes.

  • You need to work quickly and avoid stopping in the middle of a board for it can alter your work.

You may find problems in painting your fences and your house and here are practical solutions to some of them:

  • Older decks and fences that have grayed out and looked stained.

To treat this problem, there is a new product available to help you out. Usually, redwood, red cedar and other resin-rich wood species contain a substance which turns to gray look when the wood is exposed to some period of time. This new product will remove the tanner or the substance from the wood’s surface. The treatment has oxalic acid that will remove the damaged surface. With this, the fresh wood will come out. It is very important though to follow the precautionary mark on the label of the material as it could damage the nearby plants or may cause you personal injury.

  • Choosing between a semi-transparent or solid color stain.

In application to olden house where wood shows agedness, uneven wear, excessive porosity and even severe color variances, a solid or opaque stain is better. This will certainly cover and correct these imperfections. If the wood is damaged beyond repair, it is necessary to replace it before staining the whole surface.

  • Why the color of the stain varies at the beginning of the can as compared to the tone near the bottom of the can?

You are likely to encounter this problem with interior oil stains with less viscosity. This is because they have thinner consistency. To remedy this, it is necessary to stir the material from time to time to get the uniformity of the overall tone.

  • Uneven finish of satin polyurethane varnish.

Some areas maybe glossy while some may show matte flat finish. This is because the material is of the same type of product as gloss. It is necessary to stir the product constantly to attain uniformity of the sheen.

When you have finished the job, you can imagine a smooth stained or painted fence around the house. It looks great especially when viewed in front of the house. The big cracks are gone and replaced with a perfect finish that no one can identify from the old fence you have.
