Feng Shui is an ancient Asian art that incorporates the laws of heaven and earth by aligning your space with yin and yang force fields. It is said to improve the life of those who follow its rules, by granting Qi. Qi is your internal or physical energy. There are many teqhniques used when incorporating Feng Shui into your home. When working with the color orange, the best technique to use is Wu Xing, or Five Elements.

Wu Xing elements include wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each of the five elements is represented by a different color.

  • Wood is represented by green
  • Fire is represented by red and orange
  • Earth is represented by yellow
  • Metal is represented by white
  • Water is represented by black and blue

When working with colors in Feng Shui, you must be very careful. There are two different cycles of interactions between each of the phases. The first cycle is generating/creation or mother-son. In this cycle, remember that wood feeds fire, fire creates earth, earth bears metal, metal carries water and water nourishes wood. In this positive cycle, it is okay to incorporate more elements than just fire since none of the elements destroy the others.

The second cycle is overcoming/destruction or grandfather-nephew. With this cycle you should be very alert when using color because here, wood parts earth, earth absorbs water, water quenches fire, fire melts metal and metal chops wood. Another overcoming cycle is one in which wood absorbs water, water rusts metal, metal breaks up earth, earth smothers fire and fire burns wood.

The color orange represents youth and creativity, happiness and speech. When you use orange in a room where people often gather, you can expect the spark of many laughs and interesting conversations. Incorporate the elements of fire and metal using orange with black or blue to balance the room using the full yin (metal) and full yang (fire). Happiness will overcome sadness, and youth will overcome old age, as fire melts metal in the overcoming Feng Shui cycle of Wu Xing.

There are plenty of other color combinations to choose from when using orange with Feng Shui, but remember to keep the room balanced. Only use orange with other colors when you feel like there something you would like to overcome or create. By using orange in Feng Shui, you prove to be very energetic and passionate. Fire is a dominant element, so use orange wisely when decorating your space.
