Finding the Right Builder for Your House Plans

After searching through dozens of house plans, you finally find the perfect one. It’s perfect for you and your family, and even a match for your lot.  Now all you have to do is find the right builder.  The following questions can help you find the right builder for your house plans.

•    Is the builder licensed in your local area?  This is necessary for you to obtain permits.

•    How long has the builder been in business?  How long has this builder been at the current address?  A builder who has been around for years in the same area can give you some peace of mind since they are established.

•    How many homes does the builder construct each year? Demand for their business is a good sign.

•    Can the builder provide references?  Definitely call references.  This is a big decision and you can benefit from the experience of others who already used the builder.

•    Has the builder won any awards?  It is a good testimony for them if they have.

•    Is the contract easy to read?  A confusing contract may be a sign that this is not the best builder for your house plans.

•    Does the builder have a warranty program?  You want to have confidence that the builder stands behind his/her work.

•    Is the builder a member of the Home Building Association?  It is a good resource for builders.

While none of the above questions should necessarily eliminate any builders from consideration, they may give you some direction.  Interview several builders and take the process seriously.  You carefully selected your house plans – you need select your builder just as carefully.  Building a home can be a stressful experience.  By choosing the right builder, you can help ensure that your house plans become the home of your dreams.
