As the world finds more and more uses for GPS technology, it makes you wonder how the GPS system will evolve to meet higher requirements once its use is maximized. For now, we use it in various ways that creates convenience in our daily lives. The GPS technology helps engineers plan better road systems and develop better routes in and out of cities. It can help find trapped climbers on a mountain or rescue children lost in the woods. Privacy issues are raised though with the use of the GPS system, some sectors believe it imposes on a person s right to privacy. The benefits far outweigh the negative effects of this technology and you can already tell that it won t be going anywhere anytime soon. To assess the future of GPS technology we need to look at how it is being used today and where and how it can be improved.

1. The accessibility of GPS technology
The world has been reassured by the United States Air Force that GPS technology will be around for years to come. The USAF owns and runs the GPS system and allows the technology to be used commercially worldwide. Development has been slow though due to delays and rising costs. Although we won t be seeing major developments in the near future we are reassured that GPS technology we enjoy now will be maintained.

2. Better performing satellites
The satellites that send signals to the GPS receivers orbit the earth around the clock so information can be gathered anytime and anywhere. It has a lifespan though and needs to be replaced when its time is up. Usually it takes ten years before another satellite takes its place in orbit. There are better satellites being developed that would usher in the next generation of satellites. Now that we ve seen what the technology can do, improvements can be made to get a better and accurate signal. These new satellites will have better accuracy and will be capable of finding the position of a moving object. More sectors of society will benefit from the new satellites such as the disabled, public works and rescue teams.

3. Provide more information about a location
The GPS devices display maps that are stored in the device s memory and can be updated for changes. These maps contain basic information like street names and enable you to input additional data for landmarks you wish to identify. The future of the GPS system could also improve on the information by taking additional data from the web like reviews or information contributed from people who have been at that specific location. Combining the data from the internet and the GPS will provide more information that people can use.

Although change may come slowly to GPS technology, steps are already being made to improve on the system to better provide accurate positions and information.
