Doberman Pinschers called in short as simply Doberman or Dobermann is considered to have developed around 1890 at Germany. The person behind the breeding is Louis Dobermann; hence the breed is so named. Louis Dobermann desired a unique and different breed with the qualities of strength, intelligence, ferocity and loyalty. It is said to be a mixture of several breeds like the German Pointer (GSP), German Shepherd, Thuringian Shepherd, Rottweiler, Pinscher, Manchester Terrier, Beauceron, Black Greyhound, The English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan), Great Dane, and Weimaraner.

The Doberman Pinscher is a common domestic dog breed. It is also popular as a pet as it is a smart, devoted, alert and loyal pet. They make loyal and good companions. They can also be a guardian and tracker due to their loyalty. Due to their inherent qualities, they are used as watch dogs, police dogs and guard dogs.

Their bodies are medium in size, strong, powerful, and compact. Their bodies are muscular and when looked from a distance, it looks square muscular. Their height varies between twenty four inches to a maximum of twenty eight inches when measured from shoulders. Their weight varies between sixty pounds and a maximum of a hundred pound. Their coat consists of tiny short hair which gives it a shiny, lustrous, and smooth look. Hence, the coat is very easy to maintain. They shed hair like any other dog. The Doberman Pinscher can be of various colors such as reddish, black or fawn color, which depends on the genes present. The black color is the most popular and the most common among this breed. The American Doberman mostly have a coat of rust color with other color variations such as the common black mixed up with the reddish rust color.

The Doberman are very social animals and socialize well among people, children and other pets too. They make excellent house pets and companions. However, due to their large size, one needs to supervise them when small children are around.
The Doberman Pinschers are gentle in nature, and are very loving, loyal and intelligent. They normally do not attack until and unless they are provoked, attacked, feel threatened or mistreated. Normally they shall attack if they feel that their family members or territory (property or possessions) are in danger. Their instinct to attack is due to their fierce loyalty and devotion towards their owner and the owners families. Besides that, they will not hesitate to attack intruders. Most intruders would like to avoid them due to their size and strength. Hence, they can make good watch dogs. Normally, they are calm, friendly and not at all aggressive. They become aggressive and hostile only when under attack.

Their diet is of one and half cans to maximum two and half cans of good meat. It can also be five cups of dog food (dry) having minerals and vitamins. In the winters, yeast tablets and cod liver oil can be given to help keep their coat and skin remain shiny and healthy.
