The grid system is used to organize the different elements that go into a design project. Architects likewise use the grid system to organize space. For graphic design, the grid is a two-dimensional with overlapping vertical and horizontal lines created to allow designer to organize or place text and graphics in a more systematic manner. It is a useful tool for graphic designers to organize content. In a given page, you can use a combination of columns and rows to organize your content. Similar to a newspaper with each article partitioned in columns or rows that includes texts and graphics, the graphic designer can likewise use the concept of grid system to visualize the placement of graphics and texts. The grid serves as a guide for you and keeps your work neat and within the prescribed size.

To begin a project, you must have an idea how your final project output would appear. There are no limits to the types of grids that you can use on your project. You can use equally sized columns and a header grid or you can fit a variety of shapes to suit your design.

One way for you to determine the appropriate size for each element is consider using ratio and proportion. You can use rational proportions such as 1:2 or 2:3 or you can experiment with irrational proportions such as 1: 4141 typically used for A4 sized paper. To create balance, you can use the size of the paper as guide. You can also use more complex ratios such as the golden mean to construct your grid lines. The important thing here is the grid system you have created will fit your design purpose.

On a piece of paper, begin by drawing light penciled margins approximating the space you intend to use for the different elements of your design. Without putting in any detail, you can move around the boxes or columns to figure out how best to layout your design. After that is settled, you may start assigning a grid space for each of the elements of your design. Make the adjustments as needed. It is also easier to use graphic design programs to construct the grids. You can shift each grid element until you reach your final decision. You can later remove the margins and imaginary lines you put in earlier to view the final arrangement.

When you have established what type of grid system you will use, it will be up to you to decide whether you will confine yourself to the grid or create overlaps to make your design more interesting. Although grids might be construed as limiting, it is not. You just need to be more creative about it to create interesting patterns and page designs. Adopting a grid system to organize your work makes it easier for you to see if your design concept will work or not but without the
need of putting in the detail. As a creative designer, you must have all the leeway to produce the most interesting combination of lines, texts and images.

July 16-25 at La Conner SeaSide Gallery ¡°Celebrate Skagit Art¡± Features Skagit Valley¡¯s Working Landscapes. Now in its 15th year, the popular "Celebrate Skagit Art " Show, sponsored by Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, features a variety of media by 50 well-known local artists inspired by the Skagit Valley¡¯s working landscapes and lots of opportunity to learn more about the importance of protecting and preserving some of the world¡¯s best farmland. "Celebrate Skagit Art " opens Friday, July 16, 11 am ¨C 5 pm at La Conner Seaside Gallery, located at 112 Morris Street in La Conner. Hours on Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18 are 10 am ¨C 6 pm. The show continues for the next week, from 11am to 5 pm, Monday, July 19 - Sunday, July 25. The gallery is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be a reception for the artists and SPF members on July 17 from 6:30-8:30 at the gallery.
