In a bid to offer cost-effective, reliable and scalable data protection, Hewlett-Packard has launched a new disk-based backup system with data deduplication technology.

HP will provide two methods of data deduplication called ‘Dynamic’ deduplication and ‘Accelerated’ deduplication. The former will address both the affordability demands of small and mid-sized businesses (SMB) and the latter will look to the high performance requirements of large enterprise customers.

“From small businesses to large enterprises we aimed to improve data protection,” said Business Manager for HP StorageWorks Division Adam Thew. “When we looked at customer needs we realised that one size did not fit all. That’s why we’ve created the Accelerated and Dynamic packages.”

‘Dynamic’ deduplication technology will be integrated into the HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System. Not only does this have a cost-saving impact on SMBs – HP claimed that it is 45 per cent more affordable than similar systems on the market – it is also easy to deploy and manage, the firm said.

Other key benefits of D2D dynamic deduplication is that it maximises disk space via synchronous backup operations that deduplicates data as it is stored to the disk. It also reduces the amount of disk and memory required to deduplicate data by leveraging proprietary technology created by HP Labs.

Meanwhile, with ‘Accelerated’ deduplication, HP offers deduplication with the HP StorageWorks Virtual Library Systems (VLS). This enables fast data backups, allowing enterprise customers to improve business productivity with market-leading scalability and performance. It will also enable customers to minimise administrative overheads, reduce floor space and lower energy consumption by decreasing storage capacity requirements

According to Thew, HP’s deduplication solutions are a significant improvement to what is available now. “Deduplication provides 50 per cent times the efficiency of what is capable today. The major benefits customers will see is the increased effectiveness of the capacity of their backdrop systems," he said. "Also, by retaining multiple copies of disks you can have faster recovery and enable better disaster protection as well as having the cost of replication significantly reduced.”
