2 . Fundamentals of HVAC Systems and HVAC Installation/Removal

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, commonly referred to as HVAC systems, provide a regulated climate within a building. This type of climate control is typical inside office buildings, service facilities and retail locations.
Air is delivered to and removed from spaces through a process known as room air distribution. Room air distribution results are achieved through a unique balance of HVAC equipment and functionality that preserves air pressure relationships between spaces, while reducing air infiltration and providing proper ventilation. It is through the relatively complex HVAC installation/removal procedures, the physical HVAC equipment and room area distribution process that a controlled climate is achieved for year round comfort indoors.

Forced Air HVAC heating systems provide the option of double duty performance, as the ductwork required for the heating system is capable of being utilized as the ductwork for an HVAC air conditioning system during warmer months of the year. Boiler fed HVAC heating systems distribute the heat generated from the hot water provided by the boiler through pipes, making this type of HVAC heating system equipment non-conducive to being used to distribute cold air. With the exception of thermostats and ductwork or pipe and possibly the condenser, HVAC equipment is typically located in a furnace room, utility room or maintenance room. The HVAC equipment is typically maintained and repaired as required by HVAC technicians who have met the educational requirements necessary to perform duties such as HVAC installation/removal.

3 . Educational Requirements for HVAC Installation/Removal

An HVAC technician performs maintenance on HVAC systems, is experienced in HVAC installation/removal and often has experience in refrigeration as well. The projected industry demand for certified HVAC technicians is strong through 2014, and the pay scale is also expected to increase, making an HVAC technician a viable career option for those who are mechanically inclined and have an interest in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Although you can earn a degree online for entry-level HVAC technician positions, and it is also possible to enter the HVAC technician industry through on-the-job training, a greater knowledge base and practical experience is gained from attendance at an accredited HVAC educational facility. Certified HVAC technicians with the proper educational background are more likely to enjoy increased responsibilities and salary in a shorter period of time than those who have not had the benefit of formal training.

The course curriculum relative to becoming an HVAC technician typically includes training in fundamental air conditioning systems and design, HVAC electrical and circuitry specifications and other educational courses required to be successfully trained in HVAC installation/removal and maintenance. With the knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer processes and mechanical design, HVAC technicians provide HVAC installation/removal and maintenance for both businesses and private residences. The outlook for the HVAC installation/removal and maintenance industry is positive, however, as with any career, there are challenges and benefits that must be personally considered before investing in the educational requirements that will lead to success in the HVAC industry.

4 . Challenges Associated with HVAC Installation/Removal and Maintenance

HVAC technicians face certain challenges that are unique to the HVAC industry. Those with the education and experience to understand these challenges and work towards conquering the obstacles an HVAC technician may have to contend with typically excel in both position and salary in a relatively short period of time. Some of the unique challenges associated with HVAC installation/removal, maintenance and repair include energy efficiency and quality of airflow.

The fundamental purpose of HVAC systems is to provide a comfortable and healthy controlled climate for the occupants of the building, therefore air quality is critical. Effective and efficiently designed HVAC equipment is necessary to maintain a climate controlled atmosphere with both the warm and cool air distributed throughout the building being of premium quality. The more advanced an HVAC system is,the more challenging it can be to complete HVAC installation/removal and maintenance. Investing in continuing education courses is one of the best ways to make sure an HVAC technician is skilled and familiar with the most advanced HVAC technologies.

The most energy efficient HVAC systems strive to use minimal amounts of non-renewable energy and water and produce few air pollutant emissions. However, reducing the amount of heating and cooling required in a particular building is the most effective way to conserve energy and the costs associated with maintaining an HVAC system. This is best accomplished by incorporating passive heating and cooling architectural enhancements that include utilizing solar power and determining natural opportunities for ventilation and cooling.
