Even with a good haircut, sometimes it's difficult to style your hair the way you want it. Adding accessories can be a fun and easy way to change your hairstyle without taking any drastic or expensive steps. Choosing what accessories to buy does not have to be difficult, so long as you take care to purchase ones suited to your styling needs and abilities.
- Assess your hair type. Thinner, finer hair will require different kinds of accessories than thicker, coarser hair. Some accessories will complement straight hair styles, and some will be more flattering to curly hair. Also take into consideration the length of your hair, which can dictate the variety of styles you can create and the accessories necessary for making them.
- Decide on the type of style you would like to have. Looking for something simple for medium- to long hair? Try a ponytail, for which you need only one kind of accessory: an elastic band usually called a ponytail holder. Do you want to dress up a casual hair-down style? You might want to try colored barrettes. To create a more complicated updo, like a French twist or bun, you'll want bobby pins.
- Once you've decided what you'll need to style your hair, you are ready to make your purchases. However, if you don't have a particular hairstyle in mind, don't worry. Browse magazines for ideas, or let the variety of accessories you find in your store of choice inspire you.
Where to buy your accessories is really the easiest part of the entire process. You can find a wide variety in a major retailer like Target, or a smaller, more specific chain like Sally Beauty Supply. Any store that sells hair care items such as hairbrushes and combs should also carry the styling accessories you are looking for. Generally, the larger the store, the lower the prices for pins, barrettes, and whatever else you are looking for.
