Basic hair care is essential to great self-esteem. It's an important part of your beauty routine and helps in putting the finishing touches on your appearance. You'll feel better when your hair looks shiny, full of life and silky smooth. If it looks lifeless and dull, that's usually a good indication that you're neglecting your hair. A good basic hair care routine is all it takes to return a shiny lustre to your hair.

The first and most important step in getting your hair back in shape is figuring out what type of hair you actually have. Dry, oily and normal are the three basic types of hair.

Dry hair is usually caused by inactive oil glands and will need a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Oily hair is due to overactive oil glands. A good shampoo and conditioner made for oily hair is ideal for this hair type.

Normal hair is balanced in oil secretion and is the easiest type of hair to maintain. A shampoo and conditioner made for normal hair should be sufficient.

Now that you've identified your hair type, the next step is shampooing and conditioning your hair.

  1. To begin, wet hair with warm water and apply a quarter to a half-dollar size amount of shampoo into your hair. Using your fingertips, gently massage the shampoo into the scalp and hair and then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

  2. Conditioning should be the next step in your basic hair care routine. Begin by applying a quarter to half-dollar size amount of conditioner into the hair and leave it in for a few minutes. After the time is up, rinse the hair thoroughly and pat hair dry with a soft towel.
