Technically Speaking: Helicopter Mechanics Keep It in the Air
by Emily Kerr

During hurricane Katrina, countless victims were lifted to safety by helicopter search-and-rescue teams. Helicopter mechanics are responsible for keeping such aircraft in top-notch condition.

What Helicopter Mechanics Do

In addition to completing routine inspections required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), helicopter mechanics perform a number of significant functions. Some of these include:

• diagnosing and troubleshooting systems for malfunctions
• assisting in removal and replacement of engines
• replacement of parts
• testing and replacing airframe and fuselage component

What You Learn at Helicopter Mechanics School

While many helicopter mechanics received their training in the military, most obtained their education at a helicopter mechanic school. There are approximately 200 aviation mechanic trade schools certified by the FAA in the United States. While enrolled at one of these institutions, you can expect to learn:

• materials, methods, tools and standard practices of the aircraft mechanic trade
• models of helicopters to be maintained
• safety procedures for aircraft maintenance
• math
• physics
• chemistry
• electronics
• mechanical drawing

In order to become a helicopter mechanic, the FAA requires 1900 class hours, so most helicopter mechanic school programs run 24 to 30 months.

Job Outlook for Helicopter Mechanics

The job outlook for helicopter mechanics remains excellent, with strong competition for the best paying jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, helicopter mechanics in the United States make a mean annual salary of nearly $50,000.
