Having a rust stain on your carpet is not the end of the world because you may be able to get rid of it, and you can even do it yourself. This is especially the case if the stain is new. You can take care of the stain with some products that you probably already have in your kitchen. If you see a rust stain you do not have to tear up your carpet and buy a new one. It can be much less expensive to try to remove the stain.

Some of the things you will need are:

Spray bottles
Lemon juice
Paper towels
Dishwashing detergent
Hand Towels (white are recommended)
Utility knives

Here are some steps to take to rid your carpet of rust stains.

The first thing to do is try to scrape off the rust from the carpet using a dull utility knife.

Saturate the whole stain by spraying it with a spray bottle full of lemon juice.

Let the juice on the stain for at least 5 minutes but never longer than 10 minutes.

Using paper towels blot the stain but make sure you do not blot to hard, rubbing the stain further into the carpet.

If the lemon juice does not take the stain out use some dishwasher detergent on the stain. Mix round a quarter of a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent with 1 quart of water.

Apply the mix that you have just made to a white towel that is clean. Now gently blot the solution into the area of the carpet that has the rust stain until the stain is removed from the carpet.

Take a spray bottle full of water and spray it onto the stained area and blot the area with a new dry towel until there is no more of the detergent solution on he carpet.

Make sure that the carpet is completely dry before you vacuum.

TIPS:

You have to make sure that you use a clean white towel when you blot the stained area on your carpet. If you use towels that have colored dyes it may leak into the carpet, especially when using the detergent solution, which will only make the stain worse.

If the rust stain on your carpet has been there for a significant amount of time is not removed by following these steps you should hire a professional carpet cleaner.

You can also rent a carpet-cleaning machine if the rust stain does not come out of your carpet.
