Rays of Sonshine became a non-profit organization on March 11, 1998, as the result of Lynn Daniel's twenty-year dream. First, it acquired office space on North Third Street in Monroe, a building that ultimately became known as The Center. Volunteers began the process of acquiring a food-service trailer to "take to the streets." Everyone was aware that when people with problems were encountered on the streets, Rays of Sonshine would need both a facility and a program to help them, so during that time Lynn quietly worked with individuals with addictive problems.
The Center
Soon an apartment in that building became available. Volunteers scrubbed and painted, and donations of furniture were acquired so that ROS could respond to numerous calls for help and allow the first few recovering men to move in.
Meanwhile Lynn was developing the LifeLink manual to teach Christian living to those interested in a faith-based program of recovery. More of the building was becoming available, so more and more clients were added, those on site as well as those who held jobs attended classes when they were not working.
ROS was still moving toward going into depressed neighborhoods with a food-service trailer and the love of God. Toward that end, ROS was required to build a Health-Department approved kitchen. As a result of that kitchen ROS was able to establish the Manna Pantry, a joint venture between the volunteers and the clients.
Another building, called The Mission, on North Second Street was acquired, and a church with regular services was opened in March of 2001. That building also houses Rays of Sonshine's GED classes for clients and for community members; additionally, it hosted ROS's regular Christian-based twelve-step recovery meetings.
ROS's collaboration with Drug Court and the Salvation Army kept both buildings fully utilized, and the housing capacity was expanded to eight men. State licensing was obtained on June 2002 for both buildings to operate as an intensive outpatient clinic. More and more day students attended classes, and multiple requests came from women who needed full-time residential help.
In May of 2003 a house on South Grand was obtained to accommodate twelve ladies and one staff member. The long, extensive, and expensive procedure to obtain state licensing for the ladies' house began and was completed six months later.
The Ladies House
In November 2005 Rays of Sonshine aquired another smaller house to accommodate women who desired to have their children visit on weekends. Also it enables ladies that are pregnant to have their new born babies with them on site. As the program was now all female the mens residence was converted into transitional housing for women.
Rays of Sonshine then aquired an administration building opposite the Center in August 2006 . Ray's now operates a full recovery program for women from its five buildings. The program includes spiritual, mental, and physical components. Presently it can accommodate up to twenty women in the residential/transitional program. An additional ten clients can attend the day program.
In 2005 Rays of Sonshine's varied programs helped more than 6000 community members who were in need.

The staff at Palmetto includes addictionists, psychiatrists, psychologists, certified substance abuse counselors, masters level social workers, and a comprehensive nursing staff.

At Palmetto, we believe that addiction is a primary drive that must be managed through education, cognitive restructuring, emotive therapies, and the experience of learning to live addiction free. Each of these processes helps our clients to unearth the issues that drive their addiction and learn how to halt the addictive response. In doing so, clients begin to recover from the shame and guilt that surrounds their illness, and learn how to relate to self and others in healthier ways.

The goal of treatment for every client who enters Palmetto is that they are given every opportunity to develop the coping skills necessary to build a long term, self-sustaining recovery based on abstinence from alcohol, drugs, and other mood and mind altering addictions.

Treatment centers often use a rigid approach to treatment that requires the patient to “plug in” to a fixed treatment program without careful evaluation. This approach to treatment often results in instances of misdiagnosis and mistreatment of the patient. A primary goal at Palmetto is to ensure that this does not occur.
