A freelance copywriter is hired by businesses and their marketing teams to write specific types of pieces. The range of work varies from copywriter to copywriter, ranging from search-engine-optimized articles (SEO) to white papers and sales letters. When you decide to hire a freelance copywriter, use these tips to guide you.

STEP 1:

Lay out your budget. Pricing for freelance copywriters varies greatly. A novice writer will charge less, but of course, the quality will likely be lower. On the other hand, a skilled freelance copywriter will provide you with excellent work, but at a much higher cost. Decide what you want in a freelance copywriter and how much you are willing and able to pay to get it. (You may want to look into standard copywriting fees before approaching freelance copywriters for quotes so that you know what to reasonably expect).

STEP 2:

Find several different copywriters. You may know of a few different freelance copywriters. But if you don't know where to start to find one, you have a few choices. You can look online on freelance websites like www.elance.com, where freelance copywriters can bid on your job. Or you can post your needs in the newspaper or on your company website and accept applications for work that way.

STEP 3:

Examine each potential freelance copywriter. Once you've narrowed down your search to a few qualified freelance copywriters, ask for samples. Look for technical and creative ability, vocabulary, style and knowledge. Ensure that the style or approach of the freelance copywriter you choose will best match your needs. (As an added precaution, run any submitted examples through a copyright engine to look for plagiarism or stolen work.)

STEP 4:

Ask for references. Some freelance copywriters have ongoing contracts with certain employers. Just as you would do with any other job applicant, ask for references from present or previous clients. This can likely be done through a simple email. But you can also check any online communities that the freelance writer regularly contributes to to determine whether the writer is the one you want to hire.

STEP 5:

Read through the contract. All freelance writers should provide you with a contract outlining the freelance work they will be providing for you. Before you agree to hire the freelance copywriter, ensure that you agree to the terms of the freelance contract. Agree to the project, payment and delivery terms, and then sign the contract and return it to the freelancer. Once you've signed the contract, you've successfully hired a freelance copywriter.
