In many countries and cultures of the world home brewing was for centuries a very popular craft. Good clean water was (and is) a luxury in many countries and alcoholic beverages where as normal as drinking water is now in many western countries. Home beer brewing and wine making was very popular, for over 11,000 years.

These days we can buy everything in the stores and most western countries have good clean water. Because of this there is no necessity anymore of home brewing so that does not explain the growing popularity of making your own beer and wine. Learning a new craft like brewing is a wonderful hobby that more and more people are doing each year.

As with any other craft or hobby you need some equipment to get started. It is an initial investment but if you are smart you can earn the cost of the home brewing equipment back before you know it. So, lets take a look at how you do this and what you need for it.

Home brewing hardware

The most important home brewing equipment you are going to need is a home brewing kit, and this kit is essential for your new hobby. Home brewing kits are not hard to find but you need to buy a good one because you will be using it over and over again. Each time you are going to make a new brew of beer or create your own wine, you will use your home brewing kit. Good is not the same as expensive because most good home brewing kits are relatively inexpensive.

You can often find used equipment at online sites or on eBay, but we advise you to buy a new kit especially if this is the first time you are going to use it. You need to make sure you have everything you need and with a proper kit you know everything is there.

For home beer brewing you need a a kit that contains:

A plastic fermenter with lid for 6 gallons of beer, Thermometer, hydrometer, sediment reducer, large plastic spoon, airlock, bottles, caps, tap, bottle tube, a beer kit package (beer kit, brewing sugar, brewing yeast and carbonation drops and an instruction dvd or book.

You also need a brew pot that can contain at least 3 gallons of boiling fluid, this means it needs to be real large pot. There are many different brew pots available in a variety of sizes and quality.

Home brewing ingredients

Ingredients are not considered as home brewing equipment, but they are so important we want to mention them here anyway. When you are just starting to brew you want to make sure everything goes according to plan, and when you use a beer kit package (beer kit, brewing sugar, brewing yeast and carbonation drops) you are sure that the ingredients are in the right proportion. There are beer kit packages for every type of beer like Stout, Lager, Ale, Bitter and many other kinds.

When you are more experienced you can create your own recipes with your own combination and proportion of ingredients. For now you just need the proper home brewing equipment en the right ingredients you can buy in a package.
