2 . Why Choose Home Schooling?

Home schooling is any schooling that is done in the home. Instead of a traditional classroom and teacher, children are educated in their own homes by their parents. There are many reasons that a parent may choose to homeschool their children.

One reason that some parents pull their children out of traditional schools is because the child is having problems learning in a traditional environment. Sometimes the student has a learning disability that keeps him from being able to learn in a traditional setting, and other times the parent feels the child is not being pushed to his full potential. In these situations the parent feels that the child would learn more and reach his full learning potential through homeschooling environments where learning can be tailored to the student’s needs.

Other reasons some parents choose to homeschool are social reasons. These parents want to protect their children from the social, and sometimes physical, dangers that traditional school settings present. Gangs, bullies, drugs, and school violence can be avoided by not sending a child to school.

A third reason that parents choose to homeschool is to give their child a religious based education. These parents may not have the financial means to send their child to a private school, so they choose to teach them at home. In these situations the traditional education will be surrounded by religious teachings. Finally, families who have to travel a lot will turn to homeschooling to keep education consistent for their kids while they are on the road.

3 . Home Schooling and the Law

Regardless of the reason that a parent chooses home schooling over traditional schooling, it is important that the parents follow all of the laws surrounding home schooling in their state. Every state is different. Some are extremely lenient towards home schoolers. They do not require any reports or testing, but simply ask the parents who are homeschooling to notify the school district of their intentions so the children are not marked as truant. Other states will require reports from the parent through the year showing that the student is, in fact, being educated. States may require periodic standardized testing which the students can take at the local public schools. Whether or not they like the laws of their states, parents who wish to homeschool their children should seek to follow these laws carefully to avoid being forced to stop home schooling their children. Homeschool support groups in your state are the best resource to learn about the laws surrounding setting up a legal home school where you live.

4 . Choosing a Curriculum

You may choose to use a curriculum when you homeschool. Choosing your curriculum can be a challenge. Some home schooling families use traditional curriculums similar or the same as those used in the schools around them. They simply are teaching the same material at home rather than in a school building.

There are many curriculums designed specifically for home schoolers. These are great for homeschooling families because they do not request the teacher, or in this case the parent, to present group activities that are not practical in the home education setting. Rather the activities and projects presented in a home school curriculum will be designed for individual students to complete. This overcomes one of the big hurdles that parents face when using traditional curriculum that is designed for groups. The type of home schooling you choose to do will determine which curriculum you buy. Some parents find it easiest to make their own curriculum from a variety of sources. One benefit of using a pre-made curriculum is the fact that the assessment materials will already be prepared for you.
