A home is the single most expensive purchase that most Americans make"and it must be insured. But more than just a policy, you want first-rate service. According to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Homeowners Insurance Study,SM now in its seventh year, there are five key factors to customer satisfaction:

  • policy offerings;

  • price;

  • billing and payment;

  • interaction;

  • claims.

According to the study, the average homeowner paid just under $800 for his annual insurance policy"about the same as a six-month auto insurance premium for a two-car household. But price is only one factor, and generally not the most important when it comes to overall homeowners insurance customer satisfaction.

Each year, J.D. Power and Associates polls 100,000-plus households in order to identify customers of the 25 largest national insurers. Enough households return in successive years to make valid comparison of year-to-year changes. For this year's study, respondents were asked about their renewal intentions, recommendations, and shopping activity, among other considerations.

Factors Affecting Customer Satisfaction
Study results show that approximately 170 points (on a 1,000-point scale) separate the highest to the lowest performing insurers in overall satisfaction. Among the factors affecting customer satisfaction, price receives the lowest ratings, while interaction scores highest....
