If you are working toward your degree in journalism, it may have occurred to you that there is no better time than the present to consider the many ways you can utilize that major to carve out your own career. Here are a few suggestions to help you begin thinking about how to apply your journalism major in such a way that you can live the life you want.

  1. Of course, one of the most obvious ways to apply your major is to affiliate with a print entity, such as a metropolitan newspaper or magazine. More often, however, you need some clips to your credit in order to get your foot in the door at places like this. Consider applying for assignments with newspapers in smaller cities and towns. This will allow you to build rapport with editors, get the feel of working within the structure of a smaller paper and also allow you to begin building that portfolio of clips.

  2. If the idea of a standing gig is not your thing, then consider promoting yourself as a freelance journalist. Between the print media and the electronic publications of today, there has never been a better opportunity to work for publications around the globe, and do it all from one location. You can literally build up a steady clientèle who not only are willing to provide you with assignments, but also are willing to consider pitches from you on new features.

  3. Moving beyond the print media, you may find that you enjoy the challenge of broadcast journalism. Working as a reporter for television and radio can be a rewarding way to apply everything you learned while earning that journalism major. You have the opportunity to meet persons in all walks of life, get to know a great deal about the technical aspects of broadcasting in general, and establish quite a reputation with your peers, if your unique approach catches on with your audience.
