There are many advantages to using soy wax in candle making. It is often less expensive than paraffin wax, and requires a lower melting temperature. The candles burn with less heat, and this distributes your fragrance stronger and more evenly. Also, it's really easy to clean up soy wax from your utensils using soap and hot water. Most important though is the fact that soy wax is made from soy bean oil, a natural and renewable resource.

Since soy wax is softer than paraffin wax, it works best as a container candle. These candles are very simple to make and the equipment you'll need can be found in your kitchen. Supplies are easily found at craft supply stores or online candle supply retailers.
What You'll Need:
  • Soy wax, in either pellet/flake form or solid
  • Candle dye
  • Candle fragrance oil
  • Candle wick (pre-tabbed for convenience)
  • Clothespin or a pencil and twist tie (to hold the wick in place)
  • Large metal pot
  • Glass or Pyrex measuring cup
  • Metal spoons
  • Glass container for the candle (make sure this is clean and free of dust)

How to Make Soy Wax Candles:
  1. If you are using solid soy wax, cut off a chunk and chop it into small pieces. Measure out enough of the wax to fill your containers. Place wax in the measuring cup.

  2. Fill pot about halfway full with water; place the pot on the stove and bring the water to a low simmer.

  3. Place the measuring cup containing the wax directly into the simmering water. Allow the wax to melt, stirring only occasionally to break up any large chunks. The wax will melt more quickly than paraffin or gel wax, so watch it closely.
