Are you wanting to build a beautiful flower garden, but aren't sure where to start?  It may seem overwhelming at first, but with a few gardening tips, you will be well on your way to the perfect garden.

No matter what type of garden you are going to build, you will need to draw it out first so that you get the design just right.  Once you do that, then you can begin with building your beautiful garden.  If your design includes bulbs, then you are going to want to plant them early.  You should plant spring-flowering bulbs in mid-September to mid-October.  They will get established faster and give you beautiful blooms earlier.  You should also plan on planting your bulbs in layers for a more profuse blooming.  Spread about one and a half to two inches of soil between the layers of bulbs.  If you want all of your bulbs to bloom at once, then plant the same variety.  You could also over plant larger bulbs with minor ones that flower at the same time.  For the best results always plant bulbs in groups and clusters, not singly in rows.

Do you want to have a window box to enhance your home?  To start with purchase the best wood for the job.  A box made out of cedar or other weather-resistant lumber will insulate the plant roots from the heat and cold a lot better than metal or plastic.  Paint your box in a light color on the outside to reflect heat off of it and treat the inside to protect the wood from rotting and warping.  Use a copper-based product that won't harm the plants for this task.  To make your planting mix, combine equal parts of garden soil, peat moss, and perlite and add a slow-released fertilizer to it.  You could also use one of the packaged mixes sold at your local nursery.  You will then need to pick out your plants.  You will want to pick your plants out based on whether your window is in a shady location or a sunny one.  Then plant them in the box to provide you with an attractive addition to your window.

Are you thinking of planting perennials in your garden?  Perennials are plants that have soft, nonwoody stems that live for more than a single season.  The top growth dies back every winter; however, the roots will survive to send up new shoots come spring.  Some perennials can even last decades.  If you want to plant these gorgeous flowers, but don't want to dish out a lot of money, then you can save money by planting their seeds instead.  Most perennials require full sun and moist, well-drained soil, so select your site and your specimens accordingly.  In regions that have a cold, wet winter or heavy soil, plant your perennials in spring once the soil warms up.  If the winters are mild, then plant them in autumn.

Planting the perfect garden doesn't have to be hard.  It can be hard work to plant them if you are planning on a big garden, but the end results will be well worth it.

WARNING: Make sure that you wear gloves and follow all directions when dealing with plants and chemicals while building your garden to prevent injuries and chemical burns.
