Ferrets are active creatures and should only be caged when needed for safety reasons. Ferrets need time to move about freely and should be able to spend at least two to three hours twice daily playing in a free area.

Caring for ferrets includes providing them with a safe cage to stay in when they are not able to run free. The ferret's cage should be large enough to have separate areas for sleeping, eating, a litter box and for playing. The bedding in the cage should be soft items such as a towel, sheet or blanket. Ferrets like to snuggle while sleeping. You will want to provide a litter box for your ferret to relieve itself. Generally ferrets will go shortly after waking up and will not have the need to go again until after its next sleep. You will want to have a litter box accessible for your ferret during his free time outside of it's cage. Make sure to clean the litter box daily. The best litter is a clumping type or you can even use newspaper.

Ferrets are curious creature by nature and enjoy burrowing and tunneling. Their favorite types of toys include boxes and tunnels. Plastic pipes make great tunnels. Also balled up socks are enjoyed by ferrets.

When feeding your ferret, you will want to use heavy dishes. Ferrets will easily tip over light weight dishes. You want to use a water bowl as opposed to a water bottle. Water bottle damage ferret's teeth and do not allow for adequate water intake. They will also use the water in the bowl to wash their face.

When caring for you ferret it is best to provide them with the highest quality food. Dry kitten or ferret food is preferred over wet food. The hard dry food helps to keep the ferret's teeth cleaner. You can free feed the dry food because ferrets will not overeat. Ferrets also enjoy vegetables and fruits as a part of their diet. Some examples include bananas, melons, grapes, cucumbers and carrots. Peels such as those on apples should be removed prior to feeding. As a treat, dog treats made for small dogs can be fed. Do not feed nuts or grains as ferrets cannot digest them. Ferrets do no possess teeth that can grind food.

Proper care for ferrets can keep them healthy. Ferrets should have regular checkups by a veterinarian to ensure that they stay as healthy as possible.
