In many parts of the country water is a precious resource. In these area water can cost more to use so it is advantageous to save water in your home. It is not only important to the environment that you conserve water but it can save you money as well.

Here are a few ways you can conserve water in your home.

Check faucets for drips. You should regularly check the faucets around your home and make sure they do not drip. It may not seem like a little drip can cause the loss of a lot of water but one leaky faucet can waster thousands of gallons of water annually. If you do have leaky faucets tend to them immediately as the more you postpone fixing a leaky faucet the more gallons of water you will waste and the higher your water bill will be.

Take showers instead of baths. This is probably the easiest way to conserve water. A bath uses four times more water than a three-minute shower. You can even conserve more water by using a low flow showerhead. Older type showerheads use 5 gallons of water every minute, but by using low flow showerheads you can cut usage in half.

Use a showerhead that has an off lever. This type of showerhead will allow you to turn off the water without changing the setting for the temperature. You can turn the water off when you are soaping up and shampooing your hair.

Don't keep the water running when you shave or brush your teeth. Many people when shaving and brushing their teeth leave the water on. This can waste a lot of unneeded water. Use some water at the beginning and end but when you are actually brushing your teeth or shaving turn the water off.

Use low flow toilets. Many low flow toilets are now a requirement with new homes. Older toilet models use 3.5 gallons of water every time flushed. The newer low flow toilets use less than half of that. You can also purchase duel flush toilets, which are becoming more popular in America. These types of toilets save a lot of water over the course of a year.

Don't wash the dishes with the tap running. To clean your dishes you do not need to keep the water running. Fill up the basin with water and then wash the dishes rinsing them off when they are clean. The time it takes to wash the dishes is the same but you are not constantly wasting water as the tap is off.

Use micro-sprinklers and timers when watering plants. These types of devices will limit the amount of water you use when watering plants. You will get enough water to thoroughly do the job and you will conserve water. These devices are also an advantage because you do not have to worry about killing the plants because of over watering.
