Having a great looking lawn can be an attractive addition to your home and also increase the value of it as well. Here are a few simple steps when you first begin to lay down a lawn.
The first thing you need to do is loosen the ground where you will lay the lawn, about 4 to 6 inches in depth. If you rent a power tiller it can make this job much easier.

Rake the loose soil in order to remove all the shrubs, plant material, and stones.

Break up the clumps of soil until you have a smooth surface.

Place the starter fertilizer and then the grass seed.

Using a drop spreader sow the seeds in two different directions and using a leaf rake gently rake the seeds into the soil. All of the seed does not need to be fully submerged in the soil but most of it does.

Water the area that you laid the seed until the top few inches is moist. After germination has occurred water the lawn more so that deep roots will take hold.

The trick to having a health a great looking lawn is watering. Lawn specialists say that the seeds of the lawn need to stay moist, both for germination and seed development. If dryness persists the germinating seeds and new seedlings can become damaged, which lead to an unhealthy and unattractive lawn.

You need to seed an area of your lawn that will be able to hold moisture. This may take watering the area a few times a day. If you have an irrigation system it will be the best option but you can still use hoses and sprinklers if you monitor the watering time. You should water your lawn long enough so that 3 to 4 inches deep in the soil becomes moist.

You need to carefully look over the soilÃA-s moisture. You have to know what the weather conditions are as hot temperatures and windy conditions will dry out your lawn quicker. When the lawn dries the color will become lighter, therefore it needs to be watered again. You will not damage the seeds by over-watering unless you are making runoff and washing both the seeds and the soil away.

After the time when the seeds on your lawn have germinated, generally 5-20 days, you should water the lawn less but for longer periods of time. This kind of deep watering will allow the roots of the seedlings to go deeper in the soil. You can start to cut back on the watering per day after you mow your lawn for the first time.

TIPS:

Do not plant a lawn in the summer time or any other time of the year when there are higher temperatures. Conversely do not plant your lawn when the soil is cold because it will hinder the germination.

It is a good idea to talk to lawn specialist to find the right seed for the soil in your area as well as for the weather conditions.
