Prior to installing any kitchen cabinets, the walls should be surely plumb. No minor imperfections should be there because it can lead to unevenly aligned cabinets. But these imperfections can be accommodated in while installing a cabinet. The installer should first locate and mark the studs for the cabinet installation.
  1. Check the floor to see if it is equally leveled. If it is not leveled properly, you should slide a 4-foot spirit level on the floor, and it should be parallel to the wall, till the bubble of the glass tube shifts over from one end to the opposite end. This location is marked as the high point of that floor. You then measure up the wall from this point, and mark the cabinet's height on the wall. Using the same spirit tube, draw a reference line on the floor of the length of the cabinet.
  2. Installation of the cabinets. Slide the first cabinet against the wall. Use wood shims at the base of all the cabinets, and level the cabinets with the reference line. Then add shims at the rear or front to plumb it. Once the cabinet is level and plumb screw the mounting rails into the available studs using screws, and then do trimming of the shims using an available utility knife.
  3. Installation of the filler strips. If the cabinet run does require filler strips, carefully measure and cut each strip to fit. Countersinking of the holes must be done so that the head of the screws used does not keep projecting above the surface. The screws should be fastened, and sliding of the cabinet back to position should be done, and then leveling should be done once again.
  4. Joining of the cabinets. The cabinet must be connected using the stiles. Drilling and counter sinking of the holes for two 2-1/2-inch wooden screws at each and every joint. The frames must remain intact while tightening the screws.
  5. Turning of a corner. The filler is needed at the corner joints. Install the cabinet and then screw it using a filler strip. Keeping the cabinets alongside each other, screw through the filler strips to join them.
  6. Leaving the space for appliances. This is done by keeping appropriate openings for the appliances. The dimensions of the appliances should be considered.
  7. Concealing the space between cabinet and floor. There are many ways to conceal the space in between the cabinets and the floor. It can be done using the vinyl base molding.
