Having a sturdy closet rod can free up space in your closet and organize your clothing as well. A closet rod is not difficult to install and it can keep your clothes organized and off the ground.
Here is a step-by-step method on how to install a closet rod.

The first thing you have to do is decide the amount of weight that the closet rod will be able to support. You can choose from a tension rod which you cannot put much weight on or a heavier wooden rod, which can support more weight. A sturdier wooden rod will be attached to wall studs so you can hold heavier and more clothes.

Look at the closet area where you are looking to install the rod. If you choose a wooden rod the rod supports are generally round plates that will attach flat to the wall and have and are at the end of the rod to fit into.

You need to pick the right hardware in order to attach the supports to the wall. Depending on the makeup of your closet you will be able to find anchors that will attach to plaster, drywall, wood, or brick.

Pick an adjustable rod so it will easily fit in the space in your closet. You can adjust the rod so it will fit just right. If you choose a wooden rod you may have to cut it to the measurements of your closet.

You have to pick a height that you will hang the rod. Make a decision on the height depending on the length of the clothes. Other factors include if it is a children's closet or if it is a child's closet.

Now that you have the height figured out you have to pick how far back into the closet you want to hang the rod. Make sure that you will have enough space so the clothes will fit.

From the wall at the back of the closet make a measurement for where you will be anchoring the closet rod. Mark it off, pencil should be used so you can erase it if you want to move the rod, on one side of the rod support. This measurement will be for the depth of the closet rod.

Now attach the rod support to the walls in your closet with the anchors that you have chosen.

The final step is to put the rod into the supports. You should test it out before hanging a lot of clothes on it. Pull down on it and see if it is stable. If it is not you should look to see if the supports are anchored in correctly.

TIPS:

If you have more clothes than will fit on the rod you may want to think of shelves, as they can hold more clothes.

In a standard closet that is 22 to 24 inches deep the clothing rod is typically hung around 12 inches from the wall in the back of the closet.

For clothes that are full length you should hang the rod around 65-68 inches from the floor. If you are using two rods in the closet the rod on the top should be around 75-80 inches from the floor. The bottom rod should be around 36-40 inches from the floor.
