Steps

  1. Mount a ceiling box in the location you will install your fan if it is a new installation. For replacing an existing fan, you can use the box already there after removing the old fan.
    • Mark the location for your new fan.
    • Using an electrical box appropriate for ceiling fan installation, trace it's outline on the ceiling with a pencil.
    • Cut the outline of your box out with a keyhole saw.
    • Slide your new box into the hole you have cut until it is flush with the bottom of the ceiling.
    • Support the box with a block of wood nailed solidly into the ceiling joists.
    • Run the appropriate wire, usually #12 MC cable or "Romex".
    • Extend 6 inches of your new cable into the box, and connect the other end to a breaker in your panel box, or an existing circuit above the ceiling.
    • If you wish to have your ceiling fan controlled by a light switch, you will have additional electrical installation to do for the switch, as well, not covered in the scope of this article.
  2. Turn off the power to the fan. For this step, you will need to locate the electrical panel, find the breaker controlling the circuit the fan is on, and turn the breaker off. Be sure no one turns the breaker on while you are installing the fan.
  3. While power is off, hook the green ground wire on the mounting bracket to the green ground wire in the ceiling. Twist the wires together tightly. As this is the "ground", it will not need insulation.
  4. Slide the mounting bracket up to the ceiling. You should have a mounting plate which attaches to your ceiling box with two screws. These items are provided with the new fan.
  5. Strip 3/4 inch (approximately) of insulation from your white and black power wires in your ceiling box.
  6. Twist the bare conductors together tightly, matching the black and blue ceiling fan wires to the black power wire, and the white ceiling fan wire to the white power wire. Cap each one with insulated wire nuts, then wrap these with vinyl electrical tape if you desire.
  7. Look to see if your new fan has a down rod,and if so, slide it on the fan housing. Slide the canopy onto it. If it is a "low profile", or ceiling hugger type, loosen washer on canopy.
  8. Slide fan housing up to ceiling and secure the washer onto canopy. Secure fan.
  9. Slide each blade onto each blade bracket until they lock into place.
  10. Insert lightbulbs.
  11. Squeeze light holders. Put each light shade onto each light. Let go of light holders. Light shades lock into place.
  12. Secure pull chains onto fan.
  13. Turn power on and test fan.

Tips

  • If you have no light in the room with the power off, you may need a table lamp with an extension cord to be able to see what you are doing.

Warnings

  • Always turn off power before installation.
  • Use caution working off of a ladder.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wire nuts
  • Light bulbs
  • Vinyl Electrical tape
