If you have a toilet that is old and needs to be repaired it can be less expensive to install an entirely new toilet. Toilet instillation is very easy and does not take much time.

Typically when toilets are sold they come with the required hardware but to make sure that you can complete the job there are a few items you may need to buy. Here is a list of the things you will need to install a new toilet.

  • Toilet bowl
  • Toilet tank
  • 2'¼ inch bolts for bowl to flange
  • 1 wax ring
  • 20 inch water supply with a fitting at the calve or the floor connection
  • Channel pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Crescent wrench
  • Bucket
  • Cloth rag or sponge

Once you have the tools you can get started

  • The first thing to do, which is very important, is to shut off the water that goes to the toilet. Use the bucket and a cloth or a sponge to remove the water that is still in the tank after you flush the toilet.
  • Use the channel pliers to remove the nut where the water tank is fastened with the ball-cock valve. This is located on the bottom of the tank on the left side. Now use a smaller sized crescent wrench to remove the 2'¼ inch nuts that hold the toilet bowl to the floor flange. Now remove the old toilet and also remove the water line that is on the fitting or valve located on either the wall or the floor.
  • Now you can put on your new toilet. Place the 2'¼ inch bolts in the hole sides of the flange with the new bolt head in the flange. Get some of the older wax at this place in order to make the bolts stay straight up and across from each of them. Now place the washer ring that is new on the flange and place it with the flat side up if it is tapered.
  • Now place the new bowl straight down only in order for it to center on the wax ring and then both of the bolts will come through on both sides of the bowl. You can use your weight by sitting on the bowl, which will put it so that it is flush with the floor. Now place some metal washers and nuts on the bolts and tighten them making sure not to make it too tight as it may crack. When the toilet is completely installed and filled with water again go back and tighten them again.
  • Now place the 2-inch rubber gasket on the tank where it is placed on the bowl. Place rubber washers on the bolts given you under the head of the bolt and then set the bowl on top of the holes where the bolts will go through them. Place some metal washers and nuts and then tighten them. Hold the tank so that it is level and tighten the bolts so the tank will be brought down and level. Now take the screwdriver, a large one, inside the tank and a crescent wrench to back up the nut that is under the bowl and tighten it with the screwdriver. Now the instillation is complete and you can turn on the water. When you turn on the water check the toilet for any leaks and tighten up the bolts that hold the bowl onto the floor. There may be a space between the back of the wall and the tank and if this is the case you can use a spacer of a piece of wood or hard rubber in order to brace the tank. Now you are done and have a new toilet and saved a lot of money considering how much plumbers charge.
