How to Know What Your Rights Are As a Teen

We all have rights as individuals and as human beings. Teens have rights as well, even if they have been treated by others as if they don't. Discover what these are and move forward in your life.

  1. Understand that you have the right to grow and change into the person you want to be.
  2. Value yourself. You have the right to want stable and healthy relationships with people who don't put you down or discard you.
  3. Think about your future-You have the right to make your own decisions.
  4. Allow yourself the right to be young and playful or goofy.
  5. Remind people of your right to have personal space and alone time.
  6. See that your right to say "no" is okay. Especially if you are not ready or it feels uncomfortable/unsafe. You have a right to change your mind at anytime.
  7. Seek out relationships with people who understand your needs/rights to be happy and not scared/guilty/ashamed.
  8. Understand that it is your right to have your own feelings. You have a right to be angry at somebody you love.
  9. Follow your own value system-it is your human right. You have the right to be respected and be allowed to make mistakes. You have the right not to be perfect.
  10. Protect yourself from people who humiliate, hurt or insult you. It is your human right to do so.
  11. Allow yourself to trust others who earn it.
  12. Respect your right to have privacy. Insist other people follow your rules. You have a right to protect your own body and take care of yourself. You have a right to defend yourself.
  13. Believe with all your heart that you have the right to choose who to love.

Tips

  • If a person does something that is unforgivable. It is your right to not trust them again.
  • You have the right to new experiences as long as you or no one else gets hurt.

  • Don't let any adult threaten or hurt you just because you are young. Tell someone who can help you.
