If your bathtub does not look good or if the color is not what you want it to be you can reglaze your bathtub to look how you want it to. It just takes a little patience and it will be much less expensive and easier than replacing the entire bathtub.

IMPORTANT: When you refinish a bathtub you will have to use chemicals that may be toxic. The bathroom, or wherever you reglaze the bathtub, should be aired out and ventilation should be good so you do not intake any of the chemicals in the air. You can use a ventilator as well. Make sure to use safety goggles and gloves.

The first thing to do is give your bathtub a good cleaning removing any loose dirt or grime as well as any loose gaskets. When you purchase a refinishing kit for your bathtub they will typically come with a few chemicals. The primary ones are ones that are solutions for cleaning that you use to get rid of soap and oils from the bathtub surface so that you will then be able to prime it. After cleaning thoroughly scrub the surface with 220 or 240 grit sandpaper. After you are done sanding rinse ways the residue with water.

Generally the next solution is used with a special cleaning pad that will rough or score the surface of the bathtub. This will allow for the primer to hold onto the surface. After you have scored the tub rinse it again with water and then dry the surface using rags, an old towel, or paper towels. An old towel works the best.

The next solution is for reducing the primer, which removes any other residue on the surface that is still there and prepares the bathtub surface for priming. Be careful when applying this solution to paper towels. If there is any damage to the surface you can go over the damaged area with putty and after it is dry sand them down with fine sandpaper. After this clean the areas with the primer reducer and then dry the area.

Just like painting you should mask the area around the bathtub with tape and paper.

Now you are ready to apply the base coat to the bathtub. This is the time where the room needs to be well ventilated and if you use a ventilator use it during this step. Follow the directions on the refinishing kit and mix the components of the primer. Place it in a spray gun to apply it to the tub. When this coat is done wait at least a half an hour for it to dry completely.

Now you are ready for the final coat. Make sure it is the color you want since it is the final coat. Again read the instructions that come with the kit and mix the paint for the final coat (topcoat). Make sure when applying the topcoat with the spray gun that you use even strokes. When you are done let it dry for 2-3 days. Now you are done and have a bathtub that looks like new for a fraction of the cost of buying a new bathtub.
