Having lingering odors in your home can be annoying and embarrassing. It does not matter where the odors come from it can be bad for you and especially for your guests. There are some steps you can take to rid your home of offensive odors.

There are many commercial products that are made especially for ridding odors in your home. Some of these types of products are sprays, plug-ins, and scented candles. But these products do not really do much about eliminating the odors as they are mostly use to cover them up. Many times even cleaning the home will not rid your home of offensive odors. Here are a few steps you can take in order to remove some odors from your home.

One of the worst odors in the home can be one that comes from sewage that comes in the home. By knowing the cause of the odor you can easily eliminate the source of the odor. In a sewer system the drains will have a trap that is put between the sewer and your home. The trap should be filled with water at all times, as the water will be a barrier for the odor between the home and the sewer. If it is the case where the trap dries out the odors from the sewer will come into the house. To remedy this you only have to pour some water into drains around the house that are not used much, such as a floor drain in the basement. This will recharge the trap with water and build back up the barrier for the odors.

If it is the case where you smell odor of sewage or urine in the area around the toilet and when you clean it does not get rid of the odor it may be the wax ring. The wax ring seals the toilet from the drain. You can try to move the toilet bowl form side to side as there should be several pounds of resistance. But if the toilet-bowl easily moves than something is wrong wit the wax ring. This problem can be fixed by you but it may be a better idea to call a professional to fix it, as it is not an easy job.

Another source of offensive odors can come from your kitchen garbage disposal. If you try to add bleach or baking soda to the disposal and it does not work it may be the rubber ring around the disposal opening. Over time this rubber ring can collect gunk and since it is damp can create odors. To clean the rubber ring, scrub it thoroughly on the top and bottom with a brush with firm bristles or a rage. For both of these cleaning items use some type of antibacterial cleaner.

It can be difficult to remove kitchen odors. One of the best ways to remove the odors is to place a bowl of baking soda in the area that has odors. Baking soda is inexpensive and will work to eliminate the odors by absorbing them.
