As the saying goes, the two things you can be certain in this world are death and taxes. Although paying taxes is an obligation that should be expected every year, there are times when one just cannot avoid being broke. This person may have prepared some amount to pay the federal taxes but what is left is not enough to settle the state taxes. Other people, on the other hand, have prepared money for paying their taxes but procrastinated that they have not completed the requirements even days before the due date. If you are one of these people, then filing a state tax extension will be a solution to your problem. Yes, you can apply should you ever need one.

Here are some pointers to ponder in requesting a state tax extension.

  • Organize your documents and forms. Take note if you have missing documents or forms. Once you see that the documents and forms that you have are incomplete and the deadline is just a few days away, you can request for a state tax extension.
  • Contact the Department of Taxes office of your state. Ask about the requirements for filing an extension request. In some cases, when you have already requested a federal tax extension, your state tax extension is already covered. Some states do not allow that and will require you to file a separate application. Other states, on the other hand, will automatically allow you to file for an extension if you do not owe them anything, provided you complete some specific forms.
  • Get hold of the state tax extension forms. You may be lucky convenience wise if your state has forms available for download from the state website. If there is none available, you will have to go to your state's Department of Taxes to pick up the forms.
  • Fill the forms out. Take note of the set of instructions specified in each form. You may get in touch with an accountant or your state tax representative if you are having trouble understanding what is written on the forms.
  • Submit your application forms. States also differ in the manner of application submission. Some states would require requests to be sent through the mail. Other states, meanwhile, have an online facility for state tax request submission. Make sure that you submit on or before the tax deadline. Doing so will help you avoid possible fines and penalties. Your request will also be denied if you submit your forms beyond the filing date.
  • Seeking help from professionals. There are a couple of online sites that offer state tax extension application services. These agencies can help process your state tax extension requests for a special fee. Most of their clients are businessmen who are too busy to personally process their requests.
  • Prevention is still better than cure. Would you prefer to go through the hassle of filing a state tax extension request than just paying your state taxes on time? As much as possible plan your finances, include your taxes in your budget, and avoid procrastination in gathering your tax forms and documents.
