How to Safely Turn off the Pilot Lights on Your Gas Stove

Continuously burning pilot lights waste gas and add unnecessary heat to your kitchen. You can turn them off by shutting off the gas line which feeds them. Your kitchen will be a little cooler in the summer and your air conditioning won't have to work as hard to remove excess heat.

Steps

  1. Remove the burner tops since you will be lifting the lid.
  2. Locate the gas lines Lift the lid of your stove to see the gas lines leading to the burners, burner pilots, oven, and oven pilot.
  3. Identify the pilot flames. In this example, there is one pilot for 2 burners located between the front and back burner. Your stove may be slightly different.
  4. Identify the pilot lines. Look for the tubing which leads to the flame.
  5. Find the shut-off valve and shut it off. Follow these lines from the pilot flames, looking for a shut off screw or valve. This stove has a screw. Gently turn the screw or valve clockwise (right) until the pilot flames die down to nothing. Gently turn the screw or valve a little further to ensure that the gas is completely shut off.

Tips

  • First make sure your Stove has pilots, most modern stoves have electronic ignition and the top does not come up, if you feel no hot spots on the stove top and/or you hear spark sounds when you turn on the burner you likely do not have pilots.
  • Turn off the pilot light to the burners you won't be using. Many people turn off two burners and leave the other two on.

Warnings

  • Gas is always dangerous! Exercise extreme caution.
  • Re-lighting the pilot lights requires safety precautions as well.
