The Basenji breed of dog hails from Egypt and is perhaps best known as the barbless dog or the Congo Dog. The Basenji is a very people-oriented dog, quick to become a fast and loyal friend, full of energy and playfulness. Their sociability is a valuable trait but at times you may feel like they've become your Siamese twin because they enjoy following you everywhere to stay close to the action.

A small built dog, Basenjis comes in a wide range of color choices, from red, black and black and tan to chestnut and brindle. This breed sports very short hair and sheds very little, making them a desirable breed for people with allergies. Basenjis groom themselves like a cat and have almost no noticeable odor. When examining a Basenji as a potential purchase, there are several definitive characteristics to look for.

The healthy Basenji has dark, almond-shaped eyes, a black nose, small pointed ears situated more forward on the head, a long neck leading to a broad chest, strong hindquarters and muscular thighs with straight legs and rather small compact paws. Their very short coat should have a silky appearance with white appearing on the tail tip, chest, feet and sometimes the face.

Despite their rather compact size, Basenjis can be aggressive in defending their territory and can be counted on to alert you to any approaching danger or perhaps just a visitor with their signature yodel, cry or howl, their means of communicating instead of the traditional barking. Size differences between males and females vary little, with a healthy male reaching 24 pounds and 17 inches in height, with females reaching 22 pounds and 16 inches measured at the shoulder.

Training a Basenji can take time and patience, but once they warm up to you; they tend to become very dependent upon your company. This is not a breed that can tolerate being left alone for any period of time.
Expect a Basenji to have plenty of energy which needs to be walked off or channeled through plenty of exercise and games. Basenjis enjoying chewing and climbing as two of their favorite pastimes, so give them plenty of toys to exercise their gums and opt for wooden fences rather than chain link.

Their major health issues are problems with the kidneys. Basenjis can be expected to provide alert and intelligent companionship for 10 to 12 years.
