Choosing the right puppy for you can be a fun and exciting time, especially for children. The cocker spaniel is a very popular breed of dog for families. This breed comes in an array of colors: black, tan (fawn), reddish brown, and buff. They also come in parti-colors, which is a coat made up of two or more solid colors. The cocker spaniel's coat is one of its most noticeable characteristics. The cost is long, silky, and wavy in its appearance. The average adult cocker spaniel is roughly 14 - 15 inches in height and can weigh 21 - 27 pounds.

  • The best time to bring your new cocker spaniel puppy home is when it is around 6 - 8 weeks old. By this time, the puppy should be weaned from its mother.
  • Also at this age, the puppy's personality and temperament is beginning to show.
  • You may have already decided as to whether you would like a boy or girl puppy.
  • When choosing your new puppy, you may want to inspect the puppy's living conditions. If the living conditions are not up to par, then that puppy may be prone for illness or disease.
  • Also, check the condition of the mother of the puppies. Does she appear to be healthy and in good condition?

There are also a couple of additional things that you want to check for on your prospective pet.

  • You may want to check their bellies to make sure there are no lumps or umbilical hernias.
  • Also, be sure to check their eyes and ears for any discharge.
  • When checking the puppy's teeth, make sure that it has the correct bite where the upper teeth close over the teeth that are on the bottom. Their gums should be a healthy pink color as well.
  • If everything looks good, feel free to hold the puppy to see whether or not he/she is friendly and feels comfortable with you.
  • Also, observe how the puppy plays with his other brothers and sisters.
  • As hard as it may be, try not to choose the runt or the weakest puppy in the litter. Reason being is because this little pup may experience behavioral and/or health problems later on.
  • If you have any doubts about which puppy may be best for you, feel free to ask the breeder for some advice.

Cocker spaniels can be either inside or outside dogs. Just make sure that you have plenty of open space for them to play in, for they are very lively and playful. Also, prepare to have your cocker spaniel groomed often. You want to make sure that their long coats are healthy and in good condition. In addition, the cocker spaniel has an average life span of 13 to 15 years. So plan to love your new puppy for a long time!
