Every organization, whether it is a business enterprise or just an organized social group, has data that is continuously adding up in terms of volume every single day. With the emergence of new technology, these organizations needed to keep in touch with the present and upgrade their data management practices using the latest systems.

Recently, data warehousing has become an offshoot of data management. This has become an in demand data management process for large corporations that have branches all over the country, and for businesses that just need a more specialized data management system for their large volume of data that their daily data management processes cannot handle anymore.

The following are points to remember in setting up a data management system:

  1. Prepare the environment. You should be able to size and configure your hardware according to the data that will be managed. Generally speaking, this task would require you to estimate the amount of data that will be loaded to your system within a period of time. You should also be able to approximate the number of CPUs to be used and the clock speed that your system will need. The number of CPUs will then give you an idea of how much memory the system will use. Make sure that you have enough physical disks that can handle the amount of data that will be inputted.
  2. Install the database software of your choice. A common software would be Oracle Database. Install the software according to manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Set up your database for data warehousing. Be sure that your database parameters are set correctly. Generally, you will not need to change your database parameters unless there is a good reason for you to do so. If you want to view the parameter of your database, you can look for the Memory Parameters option or something close to that depending on the database software that you are using. It is better if your software has a wizard that can automatically set it to recommended parameters.
  4. Access your database software's warehouse builder. This will be a tool of your database software that will enable you to use and design different types of data management strategies. You may need to edit the script to match the values in the environment that you prepared beforehand.
  5. Verify that everything has been installed properly. Your database software will have a pre-defined message that will inform you of errors just in case the set up is not a success.

Traditionally, money and people are the only assets considered in a business. This has changed at present as data and the information they create have eventually gained attention from enterprise owners. High-quality data is important to make an enterprise work effectively. Data is used as a gauge for the development of new services and products and for improving business processes by cutting costs and lessening risks.

Data management, then, becomes an indispensable part of a managing an enterprise or organization. Without it, the information that was collected cannot be retrieved in an organized way.
