Plan before you start. Planning requires no investment and saves you from loss. Look around, have chat with people you know already doing their part-time business, estimate the capital investment.

  1. Product distributor. You can buy huge quantity of one product or a range of products. Stock them in your store at home, or make some room for the stock. Daily make contact with respective resellers, storekeepers etc. You can buy imported products that are normally not available in your region, cosmetics, imitation jewelry, stones, leather goods, silk cloth, cotton fabric, etc. Give your resellers good profit ratio and they will do the market while you will keep importing and finding new resellers. This small home-based business should be started with minimal stock and capital investments--you must not hire salaried agents. Commission-based agents work better, but they are hard to find.
  2. Product reseller. If you cannot spend on massive stocks, find yourself a distributor, and use his stock and warehouse. Daily buy products that you can easily sell out same day. It is advised you first make your market, find yourself some storekeepers and sell your product on cash rather than credit. After some time, when your distributor agrees to land your products, then you can happily plan your credit terms with your buyers. I suggest you go for running products like cigarettes, beer, bread, milk, etc. You should have your own vehicle to go around the market to sell.
  3. Order supplier. The key behind this business is strong marketing. You do not need to stock, hire some order-bookies and hawkers. Every time your order-bookie brings in an order, make contact with respective distributor and break deals on handsome profits. The majority of distributors offer 15% to 40% incentives. Breaking the deal with higher percentage is the key of this trade. This business runs on phone calls, paychecks, money transfers, demand drafts, etc. Involving cash transactions is a risk factor, but if it is necessary, do it! It is a truly home-based small business.
  4. Order booker. An order booker is similar to a product reseller but you actually don't have to buy or sell. You will work for a supplier, thus you will follow the routine given to you. Visit the said merchant, book the order, make an estimate receipt. Go back to your supplier and submit all the bookings. Incentive rates vary among products and quantities. Become a medical representative and market for your company, book orders and earn incentive. It is a part time job in the beginning but your efforts can make you a supplier. Once you have your market set, you can easily take over your own supplier.
  5. Hawker/rider. A Hawker or Rider is the same person, a courier. Normally companies do not hire riders on part-time bases. You earn incentive along with the fuel charges. Not a bad job. After all, if you own a truck/pickup cab you can easily work for a company to traffic their goods from depots to buyers.
  6. Evening stands. You are the boss! But you are everything else as well. I am not joking, it is really smart to have an evening hot-dog stand around a mall, club, business centre, park, etc. Flower stand, fruit stand, newspaper and magazine stands are not advised because they are almost full day. The best and interesting thing about this business is you can exhibit your handy crafts, sell painted pots, your own creative t-shirts, wristbands. You can use you hobby items as your capital investment. All you have to spend is some time daily on a fixed spot. Municipal corporations issue licenses on minimal tax. Some towns have no restrictions upon evening stands.

I'm personally exporting and importing products on small scale, I use country postal express service. I deal in cigarettes, t-shirts, shoes, other branded items, imitations, etc. I am planning to make an online store as well on eBay or somewhere similar, but my country is way behind for online shopping. People are making great money from their online stores without having a real time store. So if you live in a country where online shopping is regular, not only do you have your local market but you may also capture the global market, or at least you can ship goods to other cities of your country with your online store.
