If you are wondering how to install bathroom floor tile, it is not a difficult skill to master. All it takes is an eye for detail and the proper tools. There are countless choices of tile designs that you can use to update your bathroom. Two common choices are glass tiles and ceramic tiles. With glass tiles, you will want to insure that they are rated for floor use.

  1. First you will need the proper tools for the job. These include tile cutters, tile nippers, grout, a large sponge, grout spacers, and a notched trowel. If you are using sheet tiles, you will not need the grout spacers. Sheet tiles are the easiest to install. They come in ready to install mosaics as well, and are a good choice for first timers to use if you wish to add intricate elements to your design.
  2. Measure your space before ordering your tile. When ordering, always order extra. The reason is if you measured incorrectly or need more tile in the future to replace one that becomes cracked, you will not be able to match the color up exactly again. Tiles come in dye lots, and there can be obvious differences between two same shade tiles from different lots.
  3. Remove all the molding from the bathroom as well as fixtures like the toilet or freestanding sinks. You will need to purchase subfloor -- either greenboard or cement board -- and screw it to the floor. Make sure it is clean and level.
  4. Begin placing the tile along the longest wall. Mix your tile adhesive and work in small areas at a time. After laying a tile, tap firmly with a rubber mallet to set. Use grout spacers between each tile to keep the spaces even and uniform. Use the tile cutters and nippers to cut tiles to fit around your cabinets, tubs, and other fixtures.
  5. Let the tiles set for 24 hours. Next you will spread grout into the spaces between tiles with your trowel. Use the sponge to wipe up any excess. The net day, run a damp mop over the tiles to clean of any additional grout. Let the grout cure for a few days before stepping on the flooring.

Once your new bathroom tile is cured you can reattach the fixtures. Your new bathroom tile is ready to enjoy for many years to come. Set aside any extra tiles in case you ever need to replace one.
