How to Upgrade Your Laptop's Ram Memory

This guide will show you how to upgrade your laptop's computer memory. Installation of ram is one of the easiest way to speed up your computer as only hardware installation is needed, without the need of any software. It is also relatively inexpensive to upgrade compared to other parts.

  1. Remove all power outlets like battery and a/c current before working on it.
  2. Discharge all static electricity by touching on a grounded metal or using an anti-static wristband.
  3. Open your computer ram slot with a screwdriver, normally located below your laptop, or below your keyboard.(Please check your user manual if unsure).
  4. Insert the ram module into the computer.
  5. Close the ram slot.
  6. Boot-up your computer.
  7. Go to Control panel -> System -> General tab to check if your computer has been successfully upgraded.

  • Prices of memory chips fluctuate; therefore, purchasing it at the right time can save you up to 20%-30%. That's about $50 for a $200 ram module
  • Ram are available in different speeds, ranging from 66Mhz till the current 1066Mhz
  • There are 3 types of ram, Sd ram(66Mhz-133Mhz), DDR Ram(200Mhz-400Mhz) and also the Ddr2 Ram(400Mhz-1066Mhz)
  • Rams that fall into the category type, usually is compatible with each other. E.g) A 533Mhz ram stick will be compatible with a computer running at 667Mhz or 400Mhz.
  • In general, the older your computer, the older the ram.
  • Memory for Windows XP is recommended at 512mb, and while 1Gb is recommended for Windows Vista, industry experts claim that 2Gb is the bare minimum for Windows Vista to work smoothly.
