(NC)-With winter temperatures approaching we'll soon be spending more time indoors and it's time to think about indoor air quality. Indoor air pollutants can be more harmful to our families' health than the air outside. Poor indoor air quality can cause or aggravate asthma, headaches, chronic fatigue and insomnia.

To ensure your home and family stay healthy, follow this simple checklist from The Home Depot:

• Box in the toxins

Electronic furnace filters, like ToxBox electronic filters, use a small electrical charge to attract toxins. They are up to 45 times more efficient than pleated furnace filters and reduce the chance of spreading flu or cold viruses within your home.

• Clean the "green" way

Use non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning products instead of chemical-based ones. Brands like Method and Eco Mist both offer "green" alternatives that are just as effective and emit no VOCs.

• Manage mould and mildew

Mould sprays like Concrobium Mold Control manage moisture levels by coating surfaces with an antimicrobial layer. It's made from a blend of naturally occurring compounds - preventing fungal and mould spores from developing.

• Release the flower power

Indoor plants are an easy way to improve indoor air quality. Be sure to give them as much sunlight as possible and use an organic fertilizer, like Perfectly Natural's Garden and Flower Fertilizer.

• Wipe away water worries

Use an ultraviolet light water filtration system to disinfect water. The UV rays penetrate bacteria, mould and viruses, destroying their ability to reproduce. The TrojanUVMax Pro Series filter promises to destroy at least 99.99 per cent of harmful micro-organisms, including E. coli and giardia.
