Installing a kitchen faucet is not that difficult. It can be done quickly and easily if you properly prepare. With a little care, you can install a kitchen faucet to finish a kitchen in your own style.

  1. First, choose a faucet that fits with the design you wish to decorate your kitchen in. I do not advocate any particular style, just make sure it matches. This means deciding if you want a single control lever, separate taps, a spray hose or some kind of antique brass fixture. Again, it doesn't matter, as long as it fits into your vision of your kitchen.
  2. Second, collect all the appropriate materials. Whether or not you are removing an old fixture, you will need to clean the area. Use common house hold cleansers, but be ready to carefully scrape the area with a razor blade or similar item to remove any putty, paint or other hard debris. Then pick up some plumber's putty. There are two basic kinds. Rolled tape putty and regular putty in a bucket. For faucets, I recommend the bucket. A small one will be plenty. Near the putty you should find some Teflon thread tape, one roll should be sufficient. Finally, you will need a good pair of pliers with a large jaw. If you can find them, adjustable joint pliers with long jaws are best.
  3. Finally, the install itself. Whatever faucet you choose, you need to use the putty to create a water proof seal between the fixture and the sink. Otherwise, water will flood under it. I suggest the snake method. Roll the putty into snakes about one quarter to three eighths in diameter. Press it to the underside of the faucet fixture itself. Then insert the faucet through the holes in the sink.

Then climb underneath the sink, and thread on the keeper nuts (these should be included with the faucet, but may be purchased at a hardware store).

It helps at this point to have an assistant press down on the faucet from above while you use the pliers to tighten the nuts. Tighten them evenly until the faucet has bottomed out and the putty has squeezed out all the way around the faucet. Clean off the excess putty with a razor blade.

Now comes the obnoxious part, attaching the hoses from the water supply. Wrap the thread tape around the faucet feeds in a clockwise direction, then screw the hose end on slowly. Ensure the threads do not get crossed. Tighten well with a wrench (not the pliers) until you are satisfied it will not leak.

Congratulations, you've installed your kitchen faucet.
