JetBlue Airways is a major low-cost airline and offers a wide range of friendly services that attracts travelers, young and old. The airline is based at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The company primarily operates in the US and is headquartered in Forest Hills, New York with over 8,000 employees.
The airway was founded by David Neeleman in February 1999 under the name "NewAir". Several of JetBlue's executives, including Neeleman, are former employees of Southwest Airlines. JetBlue started to run its company based on Southwest's approach of offering low-cost travel, but attempted to distinguish itself by its amenities, such as in-flight entertainment, and national brand snacks. Neeleman's main philosophy when running JetBlue is "to bring humanity back to air travel."
JetBlue has become the top airline in the nation because when it comes to short-term traveling, JetBlue gives passengers the same kinds of service and satisfaction that long term flights do. From JetBlue planes like the Airbus A320, which offers customers wider seats, aisles, larger overheard storage, the most legroom in coach, passengers are encouraged to sit back, stretch their legs and relax. The A320s are configured with 150 comfy leather seats in a three-by-three layout. All seats are equipped with JetBlue’s popular entertainment system, featuring DIRECTV plus XM Satellite Radio and a selection of movies from FOX InFlight. JetBlue expects to fly a fleet of two hundred A320s by 2012.
JetBlue continuously wants to satisfy customers so they can feel as comfortable as possible during their flight. One way of doing this is by offering complimentary snacks and drinks. The snack list includes: Terra Blues Chips, Doritos Munchies Mix, Chocobillys Chocolate Chunk Cookies and All Nuts Jumbo Cashew Halves. Complimentary hot and cold drinks vary from Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee and Tea, Lipton Cup-a-Soup, Coke, Sprite Welch’s Juice, Arizona Iced Tea and more. At an additional fee of $5, JetBlue offers cocktails like Budweiser, Bud Light, Skyy Vodka, Bacardi Rum and Kahlua.
JetBlus has made red-eyes a thing of the past with the introduction of the Shut-Eye Service on all overnight flights. On these flights, customers are encouraged to sleep with the help of a complimentary Snooze Kit containing an eyeshade and ear plugs.
DIRECTV programming allows customers to sit back comfortably and surf through 36 free channels of live excitement, all free for passengers. Channels include: ESPN, CBS, NBC, Bravo, A&E, The History Channel, TLC, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, MTV and VH1.
Along with DIRECTV programming, passengers of JetBlue can also listen to their favorite music with over 100 channels of XM Satellite Radio free at every seat. XM Satellite Radio is available on all EMBRAER 190s planes and will be introduced to the entire fleet through 2008. Stations range from 50s and 60s top hits, reggaeton, showtunes, gospel, sports talk and modern jazz.
JetBlue encourages its customers to “Taste the future of in-flight experience on JetBlue’s Beta Blue aircraft” which is an Airbus A320 with email and instant messaging services. These services are also free for passengers and provided exclusively by JetBlue and LiveTV, Yahoo!, and BlackBerry. Customers traveling on this aircraft can also use their own Wi-Fi enabled smartphones, BlackBerries and laptops to connect to home or work. Additional features can be expected in the near future on BetaBlue.
JetBlue’s commitment to the cities they serve is to support and align themselves with not-for-profit organizations that focus on children, education, communities and the environment. They engage its crewmembers to help make an impact and inspire greatness in others while enriching the lives of the individuals and communities it serves. In 2007, they partnered with KaBOOM!, a not-for-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. Just recently, with the help of new crewmembers, JetBlue has built two play spaces in Orlando, Florida and Newark, New Jersey. It also has built play spaces in Boston, Massachusetts, Long Beach, California and Queens, New York prior to May 2007. JetBlue, Blue’s Clues, Nickelodeon and First Book have also teamed up to provide 100,000 new books for children at risk. First Book is a not-for-profit organization with the mission to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Additionally, JetBlue is partnering with The American Cancer Society and their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks in several of their cities.
