Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan

This formula mainly functions to relieve depression by soothing the liver, nourish the blood by strengthening the spleen, and regulating menstruation by clearing away heat.

Functions
This formula mainly functions to relieve depression by soothing the liver, nourish the blood by strengthening the spleen, and regulating menstruation by clearing away heat. It is primarily used to treat stagnant liver-qi, blood deficiency, and internal heat due to fire hyperactivity, as manifested by distention and pain in the hypochondriac regions, restlessness, tidal fever, headaches, conjunctivitis, lack of appetite, dryness and bitterness in the mouth, abdominal pain, sinking sensation in the lower abdomen, irregular menstruation, and distending pain of the breast.
Dosage Info
Water bolus: Adults take 6-9g, 2 times a day. Honeyed pills: 1 pill a day, taken with warm boiled water. Children dosage reduced by half. Orally taken solution: 10ml each time, 2 times a day. 5:1 concentrated extract: 9 grams/day.

Precautions
Side Effects: A patient, after taking this formula, fell into a coma that lasted 18 days.(1) Another report documented this formula causing one case of excessive urination.(2)
Pharmacology
Lowering blood lipid and blood pressure levels: Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San can lower blood pressure and dilate blood vessels. Of the formula's component herbs, Chai Hu, Gan Cao, and Fu Ling all can lower the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, as well as raise the level of high-density lipoprotein.(3)

Raising the content of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in the blood: The formula can restore the plasma cAMP content in patients of affective psychotic depression to the normal level.(4)

Clinical Applications
Premenstrual Syndrome
A modification of this formula was used to treat 45 cases of premenstrual syndrome due to stagnation of liver-qi causing internal heat. The modified formula consisted of Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Chao Chai Hu, Fu Ling, Chao Bai Zhu, Xu Duan, Gou Teng, Dan Pi, Shan Zhi, Xiang Fu, Qing Pi, Chen Pi, and Jing Jie. A control group of 30 cases was treated with Provera. The results: 32 cases resolved, 6 significantly improved, 4 improved, with a total effective rate of 93.3% (P<0.01). The treatment group also showed better results in improving clinical symptoms.(5)

Insomnia
One study treated 72 cases of climacteric insomnia with this formula and reported 42 cases fully recovered, 29 cases improved, and 1 case did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 98.61%.(6)

Another study treated 42 cases of refractory insomnia with a modification of this formula, which consisted of Mu Dan Pi, Shan Zhi, Chai Hu, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Bo He, Fu Shen, and Ye Jiao Teng. The results: 30 cases fully recovered, 8 cases improved, and the remaining 4 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 90.5%.(7)

Neurodermatitis
One study treated 98 cases of neurodermatitis with a modification of this formula (the modification was further modified to suit the patient's individual conditions as needed) and reported a total effective rate of 93.0%.(8)

Thyroiditis
A modification of this formula was used to treat 36 cases of acute thryroiditis. The modified formula contained Mu Dan Pi, Jiao Zhi Zi, Zhe Bei Mu, Bei Chai Hu, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Chao Bai Zhu, Bo He, Quan Gua Lou, and Gan Cao. Further modifications were made to better suit the patient's individual conditions. The results: 29 cases fully recovered, 5 cases significantly improved, and 2 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 94.4%.(9)

Chloasma
This formula was used to treat 82 cases of facial chloasama. Modifications were made according patient's symptoms. One dose of the formula in water decoction was administered daily for 3 months. Before the decoction was taken orally, it was used to fume the patient's affected facial areas for 5-10 minutes. The results: 16 cases resolved, 30 cases significantly improved, 25 cases improved, and 11 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 86.6%.(10)

Aphonia
A modification of this formula was used to treat 66 cases of aphonia. The modified formula consisted of Dan Pi, Zhi Zi, Bai Shao, Zhi Qiao, Yu Jin, Chuan Bei Mu, Chai Hu, Bo He, Lai Fu Zi, Gan Cao, Sang Ye, and Chan Yi. Further modifications were made to better suit the patients' symptoms. One dose of the formula was administered in water decoction daily for seven days. The results: 44 cases significantly improved, 11 cases improved and the remaining 11 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 83.3%.(11)

Acne
A modification of this formula was used to treat 30 cases of menstrual acne. The modified formula consisted of Dang Gui, Dan Pi, Bai Shao, Sheng Di Huang, Zhi Zi, Fu Ling, Chai Hu, Bai Mao Gen, and Gan Cao. Further modifications were made as follows: Gou Qi Zi and Shan Zhu Yu were added to the formula for patients suffering from headaches and tinnitus or weakness and soreness in the waist and legs; Shan Yao and Chen Pi were added for patients suffering from fatigue, abdominal pain, and diarrhea; and Di Gu Pi, Sang Bai Pi, and Jie Geng were added for patients suffering from cough or hemoptysis due to reversed flow of qi. The results: 70% of the cases significantly improved, 22% improved, with a total effective rate of 92%.(12)

Chronic pelvic pain
A modification of this formula was used to treat 55 cases of chronic pelvic inflammation, annexitis, pelvic venous stasis, and postoperative pain in the lower abdomen. The results: 35 cases resolved and 16 cases improved, with a total effective rate was 92.7%.(13)

Threatened abortion
A modification of this formula was used to treat 86 cases of threatened abortion. The results: 68 cases fully recovered, 14 cases improved, and 4 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 95.3%.(14)

Menopausal syndrome
This formula was used to treat 120 cases of menopausal syndrome characterized by deficiency of the spleen, stagnation of liver-qi, and internal heat. The treatment was significantly effective in 23.33% of the cases and effective in 56.66% of the cases, with a total effective rate of 80%.(15)

Recurring aphtha
A modification was used to treat 36 cases of aphtha. The modified formula consisted of Mu Dan Pi, Chai Hu, Bai Zhu, Huang Lian, Zhi Zi, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Fu Ling, Huang Bo, Sheng Di Huang, and Gan Cao. One dose of the formula in water decoction was administered daily for five days. The results: 23 cases resolved, 11 cases significantly improved, and the remaining two cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 94.5%.(16)
