Journalism: A Newsworthy Career
By Jonathan Fombonne

Have you ever dreamed of the adventurous life of a reporter, constantly chasing a scoop and creating the headlines? Do you fancy yourself interviewing important politicians, or even reviewing the latest books and movies? If yes, you should consider an exciting career in journalism.

If you would like a fast-paced job that involves writing, then a career in journalism could be for you. Journalists cover a whole spectrum of topics. In general, they perform the research needed for their pieces and then present the information in an engaging format, usually on a tight deadline. TV journalists also do research for their pieces, and then film interviews and footage for their news segment.

If you are considering a career in journalism, you should have great oral and written communication skills, as well as a great work ethic and a lot of flexibility. To meet deadlines and write great pieces, you may have to travel or work very late. You should also have an inquisitive streak, as this is one of the keys to getting all the facets of a story.

How to Become a Journalist
Though there isn’t a specific degree required to become a journalist, potential employers prefer bachelor’s degrees in journalism or mass communications from a journalism school. If you don’t have this degree, you should choose a major with a strong writing component, and think about journalism-related activities like working on your school’s newspaper.

Journalism school prepares you for your job as a reporter by introducing you to the ins and outs of mass communications. In journalism school, you will learn the writing and editing skills that are essential to being a good journalist. Journalism schools also offer master’s degrees and PhDs, which could help boost your resume and increase your salary.
