Living with an allergy to animal hair does not mean you have to spend your life without pets. Many people who have allergies to animal hair also happen to absolutely adore animals. There are steps you can take in order to relieve the symptoms of your allergy to animal hair.

Discuss your allergy to animal hair with your doctor. There are plenty of prescription and over-the-counter drugs that can lessen your allergy symptoms. Before taking an over-the-counter medication, be sure to check with your doctor, especially if you are already taking medication for another condition.

When living with an allergy to animal hair, cleanliness is the key. Bathe your pet regularly. If at all possible, bathe your pet at least once a week. Better yet, if you have a spouse or roommate who is not allergic to animal hair, ask them to bathe your pet. A good brushing after bathing is also a good idea. Again, this is a chore that would be better off done by someone who doesn't suffer from an allergy to pet hair.

If you live with an allergy to animal hair and you have a pet, keep them out of the bedroom. Yes, this can be a tough maneuver, but you will be better off for it. Even when you're not home, your cat or dog may end up spending their afternoon napping on your pillow. You can see how this will make your allergy to animal hair flair up overnight and leave you awfully stuffy come morning.

Cleaning the house regularly will help you live easier with an allergy to animal hair. That includes a thorough vacuum job every week. Vacuum the rugs -- even the floors that are carpeted. Then take the vacuum hose and hit up all the cushions on the couch, love seat, or recliner. Also pay special attention to surfaces underneath furniture where animal hair may collect.

There are several vacuums available in stores specifically targeted at those living with allergies to animal hair. Look for vacuum cleaners that have a HEPA filter. You can even use an air purifier in your home that has a HEPA filter.
