One of the biggest problems when one is considering getting into live video and audio conversations with friends and colleagues is the different bits and pieces that are required. Usually, a new PC is supplied with a webcam, and this offers the possibility of using MSN Messenger (for example) with live video. However, the audio component is frequently overlooked - mainly due to the complexity of having both the received and the transmitted sound sources in close proximity. We all know how horrible a feedback squeal can be, and a microphone placed anywhere near your PC speakers will cause all sorts of trouble. Logitech have managed to get around this problem by including a headset, comprising earpiece and microphone, in their QuickCam Communicate Plus package. The webcam is finished in the trendy black plastic that is currently all the range, so will integrate nicely with newer monitors.

It is specifically designed for clipping to the top of a laptop or TFT monitor, but those with a nasty old bulky CRT screen can still enjoy webcam fun by flattening the clip to provide a flat base. The clip/base is coated with a non-slip rubber substance, and so once positioned should not wander about too much. The instructions are clear and precise, and enable one to get the QuickCam up and running very quickly. Once installed, the software provides a choice of applications: video calling, video instant messaging, and other useful options. It integrates easily with the most popular messenger applications: AIM/AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and the XP Windows messenger service. With a recommended retail price of £40, it's certainly not cheap, especially when compared to other webcams, but as a complete kit, it makes an attractive purchase for those who don't want to be messing about looking for separate microphones, speakers, or headsets.
