Dosage
Oral administration: 10 to 15g for decoction, up to 30 to 60g for large doses. The herb can also be made as extracts, infusion with alcohol, or made into pills and powder.
5:1 concentrated extract: 2 to 3g for decoction.
Toxicity
Mice were given a compound extract of Long Yan Rou (1g/ml) and Ge Jie (0.5g/ml), at 25ml/kg. Six hours later, the extract was given again. After 7 days of observation, no adverse reactions or deaths were found.(1)

Vitamin A, B1, B2, C, P (vitamin P is related to lemon); Glucose; Sucrose; Tartaric acid; Adenine; Lysophosphatidyl choline; Phosphatidyl choline; Phosphatidylinositol; Phosphatidylserine; Phosphatidyl-ethanolamine; Phosphatidic acid; Phosphatidyl glycerol; 2-amino-4-methylhex-5-ynoic acid; 2-amino-4-hydroxymethylhex-5-ynoic acid; 2-amino-4-hydroxyhept-6-ynoic acid; Dihydrosterculic acid; Quercetin; Quercitrin; Tannic acid; Friedlin; Epifriedelanol; b-sitosterol; Stigmasterol; Stigmasteryl-b-D-glucoside; Stigmasterol; Fucosterol.(2),(3),(4)
Precautions
Long Yan Rou should be used with caution in patients with phlegm-fire and retention of dampness in the chest. Decoctions with large quantities of Long Yan Rou can induce reactions such as dizziness.(5)
Pharmacology
A Long Yan Rou water extract can inhibit human cervical carcinoma cells, JTC-26, by more than 90% inhibition rate.(6)
A Long Yan Rou water decoction (1:2) has inhibitory effects on sporular trichophytii and Bacillus dysenteriae.(7) Long Yan Rou leaf has antibacterial effects on B. subtillis.(8)
A combination of Long Yan Rou (1g/ml) and Ge Jie (0.5g/ml) extracts, when administered via the stomach at 20ml/kg/dx10, had significant protective effects on mice suffering from irritation due to low temperature, high temperature, and hypoxia. It can also increase mouse body weight. When given by stomach at 15ml/kg/dx14, the combination can significantly antagonize a body weight decrease in mice. Administration through the stomach at 15ml/kg/dx10 can increase carbon removal in mice that were previously subject to intravenous injections of carbon granules. At 20ml/kg/dx7, it can increase mouse spleen weight.(9)
Long Yan Rou can inhibit xanthoprotein MAO-B activity, which enhances human senescence. Its extract can selectively inhibit brain MAO-B activity, according to a model of MAO-B activity in isolated mouse brain and liver.(10)
